Flag Live's 11th annual Thursdays on the Square concert series May 21–Sept. 10, 2009

Flag Live is extremely happy to present our yearly Thursdays on the Square concert series featuring the finest in local and regional artists. Sound expertise is provided by Downtown Browne Productions and partial sponsorship by Sakura Restaurant and the Radisson Woodlands Hotel in Flagstaff.

All performances are from 5–7 p.m. and are totally free, taking place at Heritage Square in downtown Flagstaff on Aspen Ave. between San Francisco and Leroux streets.

Because all performances are outside and during monsoon season, we occasionally (but rarely) have to cancel a show here and there as the result of inclement weather. If it’s questionable, be sure to call or check this Web site for the most current updates.

For more info, call Ryan Heinsius at (928) 913-8670 or e-mail ryanh@flaglive.com. Thanks for your support Flagstaff!

Nate Stone and Friends
July 09
For anyone who is a fan of the online phenomenon Pandora Internet Radio, the answer is yes, you very well could have heard Flagstaff’s own Nate Stone at some point. If you began your Music Genome Project search with, say, Leonard Cohen or Eddie Vedder it’s not out of the question that one of Stone’s folky melodic-melancholy tunes from his 2008 solo release Love & Tragedy might have popped up. As a solo artist, Nate Stone has re-solidified his folk roots after a stint as the frontman of Flagstaff hard rock band Mercy Fall. These days, he’s more likely to pick up an old beat-up Martin acoustic than release a banshee-scream atop heavily distorted guitars (not that there’s anything wrong with that). Don’t miss one of the Southwest’s best young artists on the square. [Top]
Burnett Family Bluegrass
July 16
Winners of the 2004 Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band competition, the Burnett Family embodies the true spirit of bluegrass. Together for almost as many years as some of the members have been alive, the band consists of parents Brian (guitar/vocals) and Connie (bass), and kids Jesse (mandolin), Ryan (banjo) and Rachel (fiddle/vocals). The Burnetts are certainly one of the premier bluegrass bands in the region and the pride of Flagstaff. Audiences all over the country are always taken aback with the skill and maturity of the band despite the extreme youngness of three-fifths of the band. Don’t miss this group who always provide a great time on the square. [Top]
Goddess Get Down
July 23
The Goddess Get Down is a celebration of the many amazing female musicians and artists who call Flagstaff home. After having been dormant for a several years, the Get Downs began again in 2008 with the multifaceted and unpredictable crew taking over the Heritage Square stage last August amid a monsoon downpour. They were not deterred and braved the elements to bring the crowd one of the most memorable and passionate performances of the summer. This year, local singer-songwriter Clair Anna Rose will be wrangling all the Get Down artists, and Flag Live is thrilled to have these amazing women once again taking part in Thursdays on the Square ’09. Busker Eaton
July 30
Busker Eaton is a trio made up of David Vincent Mills (keys), Lou Moretti (drums) and Dylan Jung (bass). The trio can be described as off-kilter-jazz-fusion with a double shot of funk. Their tunes are layered with a jazz structure but maintain a pop accessibility and are painted with a wide palette to create a groove-orientated adventure that takes one on an eclectic ride [Top]

Songwriters in the Round
August 13
Featuring Chuck Cheesman and Matthew Henry Hall. Chuck Cheesman and Matthew Henry Hall make up one of our songwriters in the round performances this year. Both specialize in a plain-spoken, evocative style of folk and blues-influenced writing that transforms each performance into an intimate conversation. Cheesman is originally from the Chicago area and is a veteran instructor of the Old Town School of Folk Music. He has released two discs of his own original material. Matthew Henry Hall is a true Flagstaff renaissance man. Aside from writing some of the most touching songs in recent local memory, Hall is a poet, a novelist and a cartoonist who has been published in several papers and magazines all over the country, has completed two books with Flagstaff artist Joe Sorren, and is nearing completion of a novel. Don’t miss a great evening with a couple of Flag’s best songwriters. [Top]
Telescope Music Festival
August 20
Local power-pop rockers Telescope have some plans in the works. It’s a little hazy right now, but we’re planning to gather a diverse selection of Flagstaff bands together to put on an extended Thursdays on the Square with the hard rock, pop, bluegrass, folk and blues communities being represented throughout the afternoon. More info is on the way. [Top]
Dave McGraw and Crow Wing
August 27
Dave McGraw is an au natural kind of guy. Having been a bird biologist for years near Lees Ferry and in Washington State, McGraw settled in Flagstaff early last year to concentrate on music. A songwriter and guitarist, he got his musical start on the drums, which gives him a keen sense of rhythm and dynamics with his original songs that celebrate the natural world. Joining him this year will be his new band, Crow Wing, with whom McGraw recently completed his fifth album, Coyotes Came Around. The band includes Tucson bass player and longtime McGraw collaborator Thom Lord, Andrew Lauher, one of Flagstaff’s most experienced drummers, and local guitarist Ryan Heinsius. [Top]
